#037 | La Route : Le défi quotidien Le défi des routes est l'une des épreuves qui nous attendent à chaque sortie sur le terrain. On ne le voit pas sur la photo finale, alors les gens n'y pensent souvent pas. Le public voit le résultat fini et il n'y a pas de mots pour l'expliquer, car ce n'est pas l'épreuve qu'on raconte dans l'image, hihihi. Pourtant, une photo d'animal, de nature ou de paysage est souvent le fruit de plusieurs semaines passées dans la boue, dans l'eau, à franchir des routes épuisantes avant d'arriver sur une table ou dans un ordinateur pour être traitée. À Madagascar, la route est le premier défi du photographe naturaliste car le chemin vers les spots de prise de vue n'est jamais simple. Voici ce que nous affrontons régulièrement : La Piste et la boue : En saison des pluies (pic d'activité de la faune), on sillonne des restes de pistes noyés dans une boue profonde. On ne compte plus les fois où nous sommes restés bloqués en plein désert ou en forêt, faisant de la pelle et du cric nos meilleurs amis, hihihi. En saison des pluies, sur les trajets difficiles, on peut imaginer les heures passées à pousser le véhicule. Avant 2008, pour aller à Antsiranana, on poussait parfois la voiture pendant une semaine en partant d'Ambondromamy. Les traversées de rivières : Parfois sans pont, c'est l'adresse du chauffeur et l'audace qui entrent en jeu. La peur de mouiller le matériel précieux dans le sac est angoissante, mais c'est aussi cela l'aventure ! Parfois, il y a un "bac", mais on vous demande d'apporter votre propre carburant, hihihi. D'autres fois, il faut simplement attendre que le niveau de l'eau baisse pour avancer. Les Randonnées : Quand la voiture ne passe plus, les jambes et le dos prennent le relais. On porte environ 20kg sur le dos pendant des heures, grimpant et descendant des montagnes, traversant des eaux ou des zones marécageuses pour atteindre le campement. Certains endroits sont un pur combat contre la boue et l'eau, même à pied. Autres moyens de transport : En plus de cela, il y a parfois la moto. Sur les côtes, on utilise des bateaux ou des boutres. Et parlons aussi de l'avion. Oui quelques fois on vole, mais il y a des moments où c'est une souffrance (si je le raconte, c'est que je l'ai vécu). Le 4x4 était prêt, et dès que Freddy a quitté le canal du Mozambique, nous avons quitté Antananarivo vers le Sud. Nous avions prévu de passer par Andranovory (RN10), car la RN13 par Betroka s'annonçait trop rude. La RN12 par Farafangana était aussi exclue à cause des 10 bacs à traverser. Dès Andranovory, le combat a commencé. C'est extrêmement dur d'ouvrir le chemin juste après un cyclone. Toutes les routes étaient transformées en étangs. Nous croisions des camions de marchandises à l'arrêt dans chaque village, attendant que le temps et la route sèchent. Certains transporteurs de passagers ont eu des accidents, avec parfois des pertes de vies humaines (https://lexpress.mg/.../rn10-un-karandalana-secrase-avec.../). Le plus triste est de voir la vie des gens dans ces zones reculées, qui souffrent terriblement de l'état des routes sans pouvoir rien y faire. Il nous a fallu une semaine de voyage intense pour atteindre Fort-Dauphin. Une semaine gravée dans nos mémoires. Conclusion : certaines routes semblent encore appartenir à un autre siècle. Maroantsetra, Midongy atsimo, Tsaratanana, Itampolo sy Marolinta, Ikongo, Fierenana, Morarano Chrome, Bealanana, Maintirano,... la liste est longue. #037 | The Road: Our Daily Challenge The challenge of the roads is one of the trials waiting for us every time we head into the field. It’s invisible in the final photo, so people often don’t think about it. The public sees the finished result, and words can hardly describe what happened behind the scenes, hihihi. Yet, a photo of wildlife, nature, or a landscape is often the result of weeks spent in mud, water, and on grueling tracks before it ever reaches a computer for processing. In Madagascar, the road is the first challenge a nature photographer faces because the path to the subjects is never straightforward. Here is what we regularly encounter: The Track and the Mud: During the rainy season (when wildlife is most active), we navigate remains of tracks swallowed by deep mud. I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve been stuck in the middle of a desert or forest, making the shovel and the highlift our closest friends, hihihi. In the wet season, one can only imagine the hours spent pushing vehicles. Before 2008, traveling to Antsiranana from Ambondromamy could mean pushing the car for an entire week. River Crossings: Often without bridges, it comes down to the driver’s skill and pure grit. The fear of getting the expensive gear in your bag wet is nerve-wracking, but that’s the essence of adventure! Sometimes there’s a ferry, but they might ask you to bring your own fuel, hihihi. Other times, you simply have to wait for the water level to drop before moving forward. Hiking (Trekking): When the car can go no further, legs and backs take over. We carry about 20kg for hours, trekking up and down mountains, through water and marshes to reach the campsite. Some places are a literal battle against mud and water, even on foot. Other Transport: Besides these, there are motorcycles. On the coast, we use boats or dhows (boutres). And let's not forget the plane. We pretend to fly, but there are times when it’s sheer misery (I tell this because I’ve lived it). To give you an overview we experienced, here is an event from 2023 that gives a clear picture of these hardships. I was on a mission with colleagues for a shoot in Andohahela (Fort-Dauphin) in February 2023. It was rainy season and coincided with Cyclone Freddy ( https://www.lapresse.ca/.../le-cyclone-freddy-fait-huit... ). The 4x4 was prepped, and as soon as Freddy left the Mozambique Channel, we headed south from Antananarivo. We strategically chose to enter via Andranovory (RN10) because the RN13 through Betroka was too rough. The RN12 via Farafangana was also out due to the 10 ferries to cross. As soon as we hit the RN10, the struggle began. Opening a path right after a cyclone is brutal. Every road had turned into a pond. We passed cargo trucks stuck in every village, waiting for the weather and the road to dry. Some passenger vans crashed, sometimes with tragic loss of life (https://lexpress.mg/.../rn10-un-karandalana-secrase-avec.../). The saddest part is seeing the lives of people in these bush areas, struggling with the terrible roads but having no other choice. It took us a full week of intense travel to reach Fort-Dauphin. A week we felt in our very bones. In short: some roads still feel like they belong to a distant era.
